The Wrecker by meluseena The Wrecker by meluseena
She sits playing her harps, raising up a storm on the reef, in hopes to ensnare a passing ship and sink it...

I have been working on this loooong... :) I think texturing is my favourite part.. it's when the image really starts to vibrate. I <3 it.

You can get signed prints of it here

I had this on my bedroom wall and it followed me to college, I couldn't bring myself to part with it. The atmosphere is so haunting, so ethereal.

I would love so much to have this hanging on my wall as a huge poster. I love the vibrant colros and various textures. It's very dramatic, which compliments the mermaids devious, but almost bored look on her face.

I like how you did the water, is that a brush or did you do it freehand?

I am not sure what you mean by brush - you mean a brush in a 'wave' pattern? No it's freehand done, then textured over with sea-texture. I have used several basic brushes to make the wave body and foam. :)

Sirens are a great subject, both depressing and scary at once.

I was tempted to give her wings since in Greek myths they were winged not tailed. (Sirens)

People would have assumed harpies or angels, then. Myths evolve, though, so I am a big supporter of adapting things to what we need/want more than what history demands.

I am happier with educating others on nuances of history, and then adapting THAT. The only reason I didn't choose to put wings is purely compositional. I don't mind if people misassume... and anyways, You don't actually need to go very far back to find this version of 'siren', Waterhouse depicted sirens as winged heads in fact, so it's not pulling stuff out of the Illiad here.

I'm definitely up for some historical learnings. And you quite schooled me on this one. I wasn't aware of the winged image at all, prior. I'll have to find that Waterhouse depiction.

It's a rather clumsy composition, (The Waterhouse pic) I always felt, and the head of the siren on the wings is quite jarring, but it brings in the idea that these -are- killers intended to tear the crew apart if given a chance.

I assume you're talking about this one? The other Waterhouses I can find all have the common fish-tailed sirens. Like this.

There was a really bad TV movie here ages ago (since I don't have television anymore, I couldn't tell you if it was still around) about a mermaid that was wonderfully dark, and the mermaids within really had that dangerous vibe. Damn fine thing to see, when we stop making things bowdlerized.

Yes it's that one! :)

I like mermaids. Unfortunately most people associate them instantly with The Little Mermaid type of sea creature.. they were in medieval times, temptresses and witch-like. Stories like that of Melusine (my namesake!) show a darker half lady, half serpent/fish. There's also the nixies which are kind of water spirits that also kill.
