Hell Alley: Sqaq L-Infern by meluseena Hell Alley: Sqaq L-Infern by meluseena
This is the book cover I worked on last month - it's for an exciteing book in Maltese called 'Sqaq L-Infern' ('hell alley';). I actually did a lot of artwork for this book and will show more here when it gets printed in April.

For the purpose of putting this up I removed the top and bottom banners with the name of the book and the author tags - this is why the top and bottom frame lack some detail.

It really was a fun experience working with the authors (there's two! Loranne Vella and Simon Bartolo!) and publishers (Merlin Library, Malta) on such an exciting project. The book is filled with wonderful and mysterious things - and is the first of a trilogy.

EDIT: I uploaded this complete with banners I made and the text as set by Pierre Portelli.

Technique:
This was created using digital collage technique that involves the layering of many photos and textures and much brushing over, to create a new unique image. Essentially its like good old fashioned collage... only it's done in photoshop, and extensively repainted.

It's charming and I hope to be able to read the book and see your illustrations on the inside. Will it be available in English?

you should never judge a book by its cover, yet, you did such a good job on it.

Simon Bartolo? :O He was my favourite teacher at Junior College :) He taught me english. Loved that guy, he had such a cool vibe to him, like he was in his own little world. That book must be great.

Really love the artwork, although it creeps me out somewhat.

Heh, Loranne Vella taught me Drama at secondary school...

I love this...the use of colour, especially contrast between the cold frame and the warm image, is very well done, and the image has a sense of mystery and wonder...

if you're going to judge a book on its cover you're doing a pretty good job of selling it.

I know that illlustration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It haunted me as a child! It was in a book with other illustration styles but there was this one, I remember two cat-people dancing and there was i think, like an ibis sort of snger - it was very 1920's in vibe. The book had the same illustrator do another couple of stories - in one, there was a cat on a jug that actually became a cat at night - I adored the way it was so realistic yet so strange!

:butterflytwo: Not completly my style, but I just love the colors and the effects you have used. Matching and picking the colors is always the most difficult about a painting and I have to say that these colors are just so extra ordinary, I really like the result!!!
